How to Keep My Skin Clear and Moisturized
Keeping your skin clear and moisturized can be tough, especially during the winter months when the air is drier than normal. If you’re not sure what to do about your skin woes, here are a few tips to help you keep your skin clear and moisturized all year long.
Try to Keep Showers Short
While there’s nothing quite like a long, hot shower to help you destress after a long day, or a cold morning workout, it might not be the best thing for your skin. When you take long showers, all that hot water can actually contribute to dry skin. As relaxing as all that hot water might feel, it’s stripping your skin of the natural oils and lubricants that it needs to stay hydrated. As a result, your skin may over-produce these oils to compensate, which may lead to clogged pores and acne flare ups if you’re not careful. Keeping your skin clear and moisturized are two sides of the same coin in most cases. If you really need a hot shower, then take one. But try to keep it as short as possible and make sure you’re moisturizing afterward. Keeping the water temperature reasonable can also help you keep your skin moisturized.
Stick with Your Acne Treatment
This tip might seem a little self-explanatory, but it can be easy to take your clear skin for granted and skip your acne treatment for a few days. Unfortunately, this isn’t the course of action that’s going to keep your skin clear in the future. If you’re concerned that your acne treatment is no longer working or you think it may no longer be necessary, then it’s time to schedule an appointment with your dermatologist to evaluate your skin’s current needs. It very well could be that your acne treatment is drying out your skin and contributing to clogged pores. Instead of ceasing to use it, contact your dermatologist. It’s possible that you’re using too much or using your topical treatment too often. Regardless, you should stick with your acne treatment unless you and your dermatologist come to a conclusion that leads you otherwise.
Use the Right Moisturizer
While it’s important to moisturize every day, the key is using the right moisturizer for your skin. If you have oily skin and you’re using eczema lotion on your skin, you’re not going to see the results you want. Instead of risking a dry skin rash or some other unsavory side effect, make sure you’re using the right moisturizer for your skin type. If you have dry skin, look for moisturizers that have humectants in them to lock in the moisture you need. Oil-based moisturizers are also great for dry skin. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, it’s best to use a non-comedogenic moisturizer that won’t clog up your pores or contribute to excess oil production in your skin. Not sure what your skin type is? Now is a great time to visit a dermatologist and ask them to help you determine just that.
